Open hearts, open smiles, open day!!
Quarantine, lockdown, isolation, pandemic….all these gloomy words and gloomy times were (almost) forgotten for a few hours yesterday at the DRS Open day and jumble Sale!
Hours of careful preparation by volunteers Merrin, Claire and Kim, plus Charlie, who was in charge of making sure we were “Covid Safe,” meant that our guests and volunteers could relax and enjoy all the lovely stalls and games. Representatives from the Derby City Council Health and Safety Team came to visit us a few weeks ago to advise and guide us so we knew we were as safe as could be.
With a range of stalls, games and craft activities, inside and out there was something for everyone. Music was provided by Reza on the Iranian Santoor, a samba band and by Erick on the guitar.
Halfway through the day, a group of our asylum seeker and refugee volunteers were even taken to Derby County football stadium at Pride Park, for a behind the scenes tour!
Many people said how much they enjoyed the day, such a lovely break from all the difficult times we have all endured. In fact someone suggested, “Let’s do another one next week!”
If we hadn’t raised any money at all, it still would have been a fantastic day. In fact, the final total was over £700, for which we owe HUGE thanks to everyone who came, everyone who helped to organise in any way and to everyone who donated. We NEVER forget our lucky we are to have such lovely, generous supporters!
