Stuck in a hotel stuck in a system.

According to the BBC East Midlands Today, there are over 6000 asylum seekers stuck in hotels in the East Midlands. Apart from a bed and food, all they are given is £8 per week to live on. They cannot work and often cannot afford bus or trains fares to be able to access college, or other sources of support.

This situation is caused by a huge backlog of unprocessed asylum cases, as explained in the video clip below:

Ay DRS we have been trying to draw attention to this unsustainable situation. We have written letters to the press, to MPS and to other organisations and we invited Jeremy Ball to come and talk to some of the amazing individuals who volunteer with us.

Many of the asylum seekers have skills that could benefit the UK population and all, without exemption, WANT to work, to pay taxes, to contribute to British society.

One astounding young man, from Chad, has found his own way to show a sometimes wary, local population, how much he wants to help. After only three months in the UK, he is already volunteering at Mind, Healthwatch, Long Eaton Community gardem and with us. And on his day off…….
