DRS receives Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

On Thursday 29th September, DRS was delighted to welcome Elizabeth, as the Royal Family’s representative in Derby, to present us with our very special award, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Two asylum seeker volunteers were selected to receive the award, Dig Thomas who works really hard to help run our storeroom and Mohamed, who works in the kitchen, making drinks for up to 100 volunteers every Thursday and Saturday!

One of our Trustees, again, an asylum seeker, Abdul, gave Elizabeth a tour of the premises, then she was asked to pose for many photos! Some volunteers seemed a little star struck!

One her twitter page, Elizabeth said, “Amazing morning with the incredible volunteers at Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity to present their Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service. Fantastic to have my brief speech translated into Arabic and Farsi.”

This lovely award belongs to anyone who has helped us on our 7 year journey. Everyone who has volunteered, donated, organised, shared and welcomed us.

Thank you soooooooo much!
